چکیده

We introduce a numerical method based on the level-set technique to compute capture numbers used in mean-field rate equations that describe epitaxial growth. In our level-set approach, islands grow with a velocity that is computed from solving the diffusion equation for the adatom concentration. The capture number for each island is then calculated by integrating the growth velocity of an island around the island boundary. Thus, our method by construction includes all spatial correlations between islands. The functional form of the capture numbers ss is, to first approximation, affinely dependent on the island sizes. Integration of a completely deterministic set of mean-field rate equations for the first time properly reproduces the correct island densities and cluster size distribution.

Nucleation, adatom capture, and island size distributions: Unified scaling analysis for submonolayer deposition

We consider the irreversible nucleation and growth of two-dimensional islands during submonolayer deposition in the regime of large island sizes. A quasihydrodynamic analysis of rate equations for island densities yields an ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the scaling function describing the island size distribution. This ODE involves the scaling function for the dependence on island si...

Rate-equation approach to island size distributions and capture numbers in submonolayer irreversible growth

We present a quantitative rate-equation approach to irreversible submonolayer growth on a two-dimensional substrate. Our method explicitly takes into account the existence of a denuded ~‘‘capture’’! zone around every island and the correlations between the size of an island and the corresponding average capture zone. The evolution of the capture-zone distributions is described by a set of Voron...

Rate-equation approach to island capture zones and size distributions in epitaxial growth.

Understanding and predicting the effects of correlations between island size and the rate of monomer capture has been shown to be the central problem in predicting the island-size distribution in submonolayer growth. Here we summarize a method which involves a self-consistent coupling of evolution equations for the capture-zone distributions with rate equations for the island-size distribution....

Capture numbers in rate equations and scaling laws for epitaxial growth

In this paper, we present a detailed exposition of the functional form of capture numbers that we found using an extended-island model. Our results suggest that the assumption ss5s1 for all s is only valid up to a time that scales like O(R). After this time, a better approximation is ss5as1b1small correction and we show that in the limit R→` , ss→as1b . We link the functional form to the amount...
